About

Hi, my name is Kelly Hunsberger and welcome to Kelly’s Quilt Studio – my quilting and sewing business.  With more than 40 years of sewing, quilting, and teaching experience I use my Handi-Quilter Forte longarm to help provide a wide range of services from custom design to binding, and everything in between.

An Ohio native, I have lived in Virginia, Connecticut, Missouri, California, Iceland, Illinois, and now the Hill Country of Texas with my husband Ron (retired Navy veteran and Michigan native). Ron and I are blessed with three wonderful children and two perfect grandsons.

I caught the “sewing bug” from my mom (Pat) at the age of five.  She made clothes for my sister and I, curtains, mended hems, and the list goes on. I was fascinated by mom’s creations and wanted to learn – thankfully she had the patience to teach me. As I grew older I joined 4-H and took Home Economics classes. Throughout my sewing journey I have made all sorts of clothing items to include suits, children’s clothing, and curtains. Just about anything you can imagine, including my wedding dress.

My mom’s first quilt

My first exposure to quilting was again from my mom.  She was taking a quilting class to make a queen sized sampler quilt completely by hand. I took one look at what she was making and knew I had to learn! I attended an adult education quilting class in El Cajon, California in 1987, and my quilting journey began.

I taught my first quilting class in 1991 while stationed in Groton, Connecticut and continued teaching after moving to Keflavik, Iceland where I taught dozens of women to sew and quilt. Some classes were taught one-on-one, others were groups: most students were military wives. I even taught a sweet woman from Brazil who could not speak English. We quickly learned sewing & quilting is a universal language and she became a cherished friend.  That was more than 20 years ago and she continues to sew to this day.

After using a sewing machine to quilt for more than 25 years, I purchased a Handi-Quilter – Avante longarm machine.  This machine made quilting a lot easier! After 6 years with my Avante, I upgraded to a Handi-Quilter Forte with Pro-Stitcher Designer.  Both have completely changed how I quilt.

After retiring to to Llano, Texas in 2019, I have now started my own business.  I am available to make custom commissioned quilts, quilt for others, create deployment quilts (for military members and their families), and teach classes.

If you would like help with a quilt project, want to host a quilting class, or learn more about quilting yourself, please call 512-348-6885 or email kelly@kellysquiltstudio.com. I provide a wide range of services from custom design to binding, and everything in between. My goal is to be your go-to quilting provider.
