Lego Man & Minecraft – Two Quilts By Two Boys (With Grandma’s Help)

When my grandsons, Danik, was 9 years old, and his brother, Gavril, was 8, they wanted to learn how to quilt.  We spent hours trying to figure out what quilts to make.  Finally, Danik decided on a Lego Man quilt and Gavril a Minecraft quilt.  I first had them draw out the patterns on graph paper.  Before any cutting, piecing, or quilting was done I taught them the basics of a sewing machine, we practiced straight line sewing on notebook paper,  ¼” seams on scrap fabric, how to safely cut fabric with a rotary cutter, and how to carefully use an iron.  Then the fun began.  Each boy cut their own fabric and had a machine to work with while grandma was busy assisting them simultaneously!  In the end both boys completed their quilt tops.

I quilted their quilts on my Forte and added the binding.  They are now proud owners of two fabulous quilts, and I am one proud Grandma!

Pieces Of The Past

Since I have been sewing for 50+ years and quilting for 30+ years, have managed to collect a LOT of scraps of fabric. After having a laundry hamper overflowing with fabric scraps, I decided to take the plunge and made a scrap quilt for our bed using those pieces of fabrics. They were fabrics from clothing I made for our children, myself, other family members and friends. Scraps from quilts, bible covers, curtains and crafts I had made over the years.

Every time I look at the quilt I am reminded of a piece of the past and so the name of this quilt…Pieces of the Past.

Memories Of Mom

Just a few months ago I made this T-shirt quilt for my friend Amy.  Amy lost her mom to breast cancer and these were mom’s shirts.  One year after losing her mom, Amy FOUGHT LIKE A GIRL and beat breast cancer herself!  What an inspiration and amazing woman!

“I came home to a box from the amazingly talented Kelly Gray Hunsberger.  She made a quilt out of my Mom’s old t-shirts, incorporating Mom’s favorite colors and my favorite bible verse from her funeral.  I will cherish this forever!!!” (Amy)

A Quilt For A God-Daughter

I commissioned by a client (Miriam) to make a baby quilt for her future goddaughter.  After asking Miriam what she was had in mind, she told me she wanted it pink and with elephants.  Those were marching orders!  At the time I made this quilt, elephants were not popular, especially pink ones!  Thanks to Spoonflower, I was able to get pink elephant fabric to add to the other cute pink fabrics I found and behold, the baby quilt, complete with elephants quilted on the it!

Eleven Days…

I was at church just two weeks before Christmas when I heard of a local family, with three children, unable to buy Christmas gifts. This news just broke my heart. So, I asked myself, “What is a quilter to do”? Make three quilts in eleven days of course! There were needles, fabric, thread, and batting flying in my studio for eleven days! But I am happy to report that on Christmas morning three children had quilts to wrap themselves in!
